Max Lucado makes an interesting comparison. In his book “Just Like Jesus,” he compares the feeling of being an outsider to being an exiled leper. He gives the leper of Matthew 8 a history. He describes him as a farmer who discovers that he has lost the feeling in his hand while tending to his crops. When he goes to wash it, he discovers that he has cut it and is bleeding. Once the priest declares him unclean, the priest immediately exiles him. He loses his family and farm. After five years of suffering from the disease and all the insult that came with it, he makes his way back to the village to see his family. While he is in the village, he discovers Jesus. The feeling was more than this farmer could describe. He asks Jesus to heal him, and of course, Jesus does. . He felt like a new man. In fact, he was! His hands and face, which were ravaged by leprosy, were completely healed. He finally could stand up straight. There are times when we feel like the leper. Some only feel good when people feel bad. Instead of tearing the flesh, they tear into the soul. With each remark, a bit of the soul is chopped off until the person feels worthless. Like the leper who has to hide because people will run away from him, the person runs away. Except the person does not literally run away, the person withdraws. Anger and resentment build up. The person does not trust unless they know they are not going to be hurt. Others perceive their words and actions as being abnormal. Instead of being put into leper colonies, they are relegated to colonies of the “geeks,” “nerds,” or “weirdoes” The person dislikes everyone and assumes everyone dislikes him or her We can be healers. We make people who are outsiders feel completely again. We can show a way they never thought was possible. We can show them it is possible to love again. Jesus told the man that he healed, not to tell anyone what he did. He told him to go to the priest and give the gift that Moses had commanded for those who were healed as proof of what he had done. That person’s happiness will be a testament to the kindness that you showed him or her
