Reflections on the Lord’s Prayer
Our father in heaven
Fathers are considered the providers and heads of the family. God provides for his children, and he is the head of his family Fathers correct and discipline their children, and so does God. Hallowed be your name, Jewish males wear yarmulkes to be in a constant state of prayer. It is supposed to show respect for God. As Christians, we can praise God continually through more than just our words or special garments. We can constantly glorify through our actions and by living holy and acceptable lives. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, shine your light before men so they will praise your Father in heaven. When we stand for God, we bring him honor. Too often, people are afraid. This is the best kind of witness. When I think of what Jesus has done, I realize why so much is expected of his followers. I got forgiveness when I did not deserve it. Jesus took on the sacrifice of men. So the least I can do is live as righteously. Then I can honestly say to God hallowed be your name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
The end times seem so scary. The destruction seems worse than anything terrorists can think of. In the end, I look forward to seeing God’s kingdom on earth where I do not have to worry about such threats. Even while we wait, we can spread God’s kingdom in small ways. Jesus said the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed; although it is small, it gets bigger than all the plants in the garden. Birds even come to nest its branches. We can spread God’s kingdom in a small way, like telling someone about Jesus or being kind to those in need or those who dislike you. Those acts are small like the mustard seed, but they grow into something big like the plant it produces. God's kingdom will come eventually, but now it up to us. I think this is best summed in Nicole Mullen’s song “Talk About It,” especially in the chorus: Every knee shall bow/, and every tongue confesses /that Jesus our Lord is marvelous/Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, now talk about it. If God watches the tiny sparrow, then no act done in his name is too insignificant.
Give us this day. Our daily bread
Christian activities build us up. They can help us be focused on God and may even bring us closer. The idea is not to be caught up in so many activities that we lose sight of God. We do have to do anything to prove we are saved except live holy lives. The more we surround ourselves with God and godly people, the better. Godly people share our beliefs and will be a positive influence. We can also seek counsel from them. The author of Hebrews must have this in mind when he said Let us not give up on meeting with each other as some are in the habit of doing But let us encourage each other all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:25) Fellowship and Christian activities are like spiritual nourishment, but it easy to get full.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Forgiveness is a choice. We can choose to let go of past hurts. Forgiveness is therapeutic because you are letting go of past hurts before they consume you. That is why you should forgive even the other person does not. Forgiveness comes down to what Jesus did on the cross. We have received his undeserving forgiveness. Forgiving someone else seems small in compression. It requires patience when the other person doesn’t want to forgive. Forgiving is not reconciliation. It may hard to forget what someone has done, but it is choosing not to make an issue out of it. For your own sanity or safety, you may not reconcile with that person. I am thankful that God cleared up my confusion about forgiveness.
Forgiveness is the fragrance the violet sheds on a heel that has crushed it. Mark Twain quoted in Stories for the Extreme Teen’s Heart compiled by Alice Gray
Lead us not temptation but deliver us from evil. T
The first part of this is misleading; God does not lead us into temptation but leads us through. Translations in other languages more accurately state don't let us fall into temptation. With his strength, we can overcome it. Everyday pressures are surrounding us, which can cause us to be stray. There is people’s criticism and doubt of the faith. There is entertainment which is not always bad but can take away time from God. Chaos in the world can make me feel hopeless. Getting too involved in politics was an additional temptation for me. . Our emotions and fears can keep us from doing what God wants. Sometimes it is hard to take a step of faith when we do not know the results. However, I choose to press on like Paul. I want to be like a rock in the middle of the river that splits the water.
